Reiki Energy, what is it and how does it heal?

Reiki is composed of two Japanese words, Rei and Ki. While it is difficult to do an exact translation from Japanese to English, we must keep in mind the context of the way it’s being used. Because we are using them in a healing spiritual context, we find that Rei can be defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides creation and universal functioning. Rei is subtle wisdom that permeates everything, animate and inanimate. On a human level, it helps us in times of need as a source of guidance. It is infinite, all knowing and also called God as well as many other names depending on the culture.

Ki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. That includes plants, animals and humans. When someone’s Ki is high, they will feel strong, confident and take on challenges. When it is low, they feel weak and are more likely to get sick. We receive Ki from the air we breathe, food, sunshine and sleep. We can also increase our Ki by meditation and breathing exercises. When someone dies, their Ki leaves their body. Ki is also known as Chi in China, Prana in India, and Ti by Hawaiians.

Reiki can be defined as a non-physical healing energy made up of life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence or spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki energy seems to have an intelligence of its own, flowing where it is needed in the client and healing conditions needed by the individuals. It cannot be guided by the mind, which means it is not limited by the practitioner’s experience or ability. It cannot be misused as it always works for good and healing to the client’s highest good.

Ki responds to ones feelings and thoughts. It can flow stronger or weaker depending on the quality of ones thoughts and feelings. Our negative thoughts and feelings are what can cause restrictions on the flow of Ki. Even western medicine recognizes the role the mind plays in creating illness. The Ki effects health as it flows through and around the person. If the flow is disrupted the body and mind are adversely affected.

Because Reiki is guided by the Higher Intelligence it knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the flow of Ki. It can work on the unconscious mind/body eliminating and clearing blockages of Ki allowing it to flow in a normal healthy way.

This non-invasive benign healing technique of Reiki is becoming more popular. Western medicine continues to explore alternative methods of healing. Reiki is now used by many hospitals, hospice facilities and doctors/nurses to offer additional ways of relieving pain, anxiety, stress and side effects from other medical treatments for cancer.
